The Gambia government will appoint a Special Prosecutor who is expected to prosecute alleged notorious jungler Sanna Manjang for his involvement in the killing of Deyda Hydara, co-proprietor and managing editor of The Point Newspaper.

The Special Prosecutor will be appointed next month, a highly-place judicial source told The Point.

In early December Manjang was charged with the murder of a longtime AFP journalist Deyda Hydara and others at a lower court in Kanifing from where his case was transferred to a higher court. However, during his first appearance at the High Court in Banjul in December, the State has been ordered by Justice Sidi K. Jobarteh to file a formal bill of indictment by 12 January 2026.

Last week, a new bill of indictment charged Manjang with only two counts of murder to the surprise of those present at the court.

However, Manjang pleaded not guilty to these two counts of murder charges under Section 187 of the Criminal Code in which the State alleged that he had unlawfully caused the death of Kajali Jammeh by cutting his neck with a knife and also killed Samba Wurry by stabbing him in the chest with a knife.

But according to a judicial source, Manjang would “later be charged with the murder of Deyda Hydara” and others in which would-be witnesses who are also “alleged junglers” would likely testify against him. The source added that “even if Manjang is found guilty” with the current murder charges, he would still be charged with the murder of Mr Hydara and others from his prison sentence and get prosecuted.

Meanwhile, a judicial source informed The Point that even some alleged junglers who could be asked to testify against Manjang are asking for “immunity.” However, the State feels that some of them do not really deserve immunity and could face similar charges while considering others who might be deserving of immunity as witnesses.
