The executive members of the Concern Gambians movement – a pressure group which recently protested against two controversial Judicial Officers and National Assembly Pension and Salaries bills are today expected meet face-to-face with leadership of the  National Assembly.

It could be recalled that last week hundreds of Gambians, mainly young people, marched in Banjul and protested against two controversial bills.

A letter obtained by The Point and signed by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Momodou A. Sise and addressed to the president of Concerned Citizens stated; “I write on behalf of the National Assembly to acknowledge receipt of your petition on the afore-captioned and the statement and the statement therein, submitted through the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the National Assembly on Monday 8 July 2024.”

“After due consideration of the content of the said petition by the leadership of all sides of the National Assembly, I am directed to invite you and representatives of not more than seven people to a meeting with the said leadership of the National Assembly for a dialogue and discussion on the subject matter.”

Reacting to this letter, the president of the group, Momodou Lamin Manjang, said: “We have received the letter and we are planning on meeting the leadership of the National Assembly. However, I want to make it clear that our stance is still clear. We want demands to be met, especially the rejection of the bills.”

“As long as the bills are not passed by the lawmakers, we have no problem waiting for them. However, we are going to give them a timeline in addressing our demands. If they fail to address our demands, we are ready to go to the streets if the country is behind us,” he postulated.
