The congress brought together hundreds of the party supporters across the country. During the voting Ousman Madikay Faal secured 43 votes leaving his opponent Kebba E. Jallow with 42 votes.
Speaking to The Point shortly after his election, Mr. Faal paid tribute to the founding fathers of the party, commending them for their efforts made for the party and the country at large.
He described the congress as the most transparent congress in the country, recalling that the country gained its liberty during the PPP era under the leadership of late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
The newly elected secretary general and party leader emphasised that he came in to continue the development of the party from where the top brass stopped.
Mr. Faal promised to rebuild the structures of PPP across the country, noting that the party militants will contest in all the elections in the 2026 electoral cycle in the country.
He called for unity in order to reshape the future of the country.
This was the third party congress convened by the National Executive Committee after the change of government. The election at the congress was overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission.
The other executive positions are as follows: Utman A.N. Jeng and Aminata Mboob will serve as deputy secretary general and party leader 1 and 2, which is to be discussed by party leaders as both secured 42 votes each, Mbemba Nako is the national president, Mam Tuti Jeng is deputy national president, Mrs Amie Jallow Foster is national treasurer and Mr. Karafa Sambou as deputy national treasurer.
