The Attorney General and Minister for Justice Hon. Dawda A.A. Jallow on Monday read the constitution of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill 2024 before the National Assembly.

The bill was tabled in line with standing Order 65, which stated that “the Justice Minister will introduce the first reading of the constitution of the Republic of the Gambia (Promulgation) Bill, 2024.”

Recall: The Justice Minister was scheduled to introduce the bill for the first reading on Wednesday 27 November 2024 but failed due to some circumstances.

This bill seeks to provide for the promulgation of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 2024 and to repeal the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 1997.

After the Justice Minister read and submitted the bill to the clerk, Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta stated that “the next stage of the constitution of The Gambia (promulgation) bill 2024 will be appointed during the next ordinary session for the person in charge of the bill to move a motion for the second reading in accordance with the standing order 662.

The order reads: “At the conclusion of the proceedings in the first reading or on any subsequent stage of a bill, the next stage maybe taken either forthwith or upon a day to the main, providing that second reading should be taken no sooner than one working day after the first reading.”

The Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) handed the final draft constitution to President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul on Monday 31 March 2020.

The Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) was established through the Constitutional Review Commission Act passed on 13 December 2017 by the National Assembly and assented to by the president on 13 January 2018.

The commission was established to draft and guide the process of promulgating a new Constitution.
