Port service delivery will improve shortly: MD

The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) boss has explained the reasons for congestion at the Banjul Ports, saying the Port has three berths to accommodate vessels. As a result of the higher productivity and time sensitivity of container lines over tramp vessels carrying bulk cargo, container ships are allocated to dedicated berths, while bulk cargo vessels queue for access to the remaining berth on first-come first-serve basis.

Speaking to clarify matters with The Point in an exclusive interview, Mr Ousman Jobarteh said it was inaccurate for one to suggest that the cement is given priority over other bulk cargo taking into account that cement vessels arrived earlier than the bulk rice.

In fact the Authority had attempted to delay berthing of the cement vessel to accord priority to the ship carrying wheat grain or rice, which was contested by the cement vessel charterers, on the notion that they had arrived first and are liable to the same demurrage charges as claimed by other vessels,” he said in reaction to comments made by the CEO of Shyben A. Madi and Sons.

“This can he corroborated from the same government authorities being mentioned.

Container limes are equally engaging the Port to accommodate two container ships at a time, which is the normal berthing arrangement.”

“Notwithstanding, the GPA Management wish to reassure its esteemed customers that the situation will improve shortly with the rains subsiding and producvity expected to increase, particularly for bulk cargo vessels that experience low productivity during such weather conditions,” he assured.

“It is also expected that the capacity increases under the Port Concession, the Port service delivery will improve shortly.”
