The Standing Committee on Defence and Security (SCDS) of the National Assembly has recommended that the government provide additional weaponry such as pistols and AK47 to the Police Intervention Unit (PIU).

The recommendation came on the heels of the Report of the Standing Committee on Defence and Security amid a countrywide tour of security institutions.

The report was tabled by the Committee’s chairperson Hon Sheriff Sarr – the Member for Jeshwang.

The report also recommended that the government provide standard communication infrastructure for the entire security sector.

It also recommended for the government to provide more patrol vehicles to both Gambia Armed Forces and Gambia Police Force as well as renovate Serekunda and Brikama Fire and Rescue Stations and equip them with furniture and fittings.

“The government should provide the Gambia Prison Services with prisoner vans; renovate and expand the Remand Wing and detention centres,” the Report recommends, while urging National Assembly to prioritise defence and security issues to enhance national security.

The Committee also recommended that the Gambia Armed Forces engage NAWEC “immediately” to extend electricity to military Garrisons – e.g. Kafuta Tumbung; that the Gambia Police Force quickly address the issue of basic office materials and equipment to all major police stations.

The Report also urged government to “immediately settle travel (night) allowance to personnel of

Gambia Prison Service” and instruct that all personnel be paid night allowance due to them in accordance with law and policy.

The Report was adopted by NAMs after a long debate.
