The initiative was in response to the national call for citizens to actively participate in environmental cleaning as a patriotic duty. Under the leadership of Director Lt. Colonel Salifu Corr, the Department of Forestry staff fully engaged in the exercise, ensuring its success.
The Minister of Environment, Hon. Rohey John Manjang, and Permanent Secretary Mr Ebrima Jawara personally joined the activity, a gesture that greatly motivated staff to extend their cleaning efforts beyond the office premises, covering the stretch from Abuko highway to GNPC.
Speaking during the exercise, Minister Manjang commended the staff of the ministry, forestry, and parks and wildlife departments for their positive and active participation. She described the initiative as “very successful and worthy”, stressing the importance of maintaining a clean environment during the rainy season to prevent contamination and the spread of diseases.
The ministry’s leadership and staff have demonstrated that environmental protection begins with collective responsibility, setting an example for communities across the country.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Ebrima Jawara, highlighted that regular cleaning exercises are vital to maintaining a cleaner, healthier environment. He noted that such initiatives not only reduce pollution but also foster civic responsibility among communities.
Meanwhile, LT. Col. Salifu Corr, Director of Forestry, urged Gambians to strictly adhere to established environmental protocols. Corr emphasised that compliance with these guidelines is essential to preserving forests, biodiversity, and ensuring sustainable land use.
Both officials stressed that collective action is key to tackling the country’s growing environmental challenges, including waste management, deforestation, and climate change.
