Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister for Youth and Sports, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to tackling unemployment and irregular migration while strengthening the nation’s sports sector. Speaking on recent initiatives, he highlighted the dual focus on youth empowerment and infrastructure development as key strategies to create opportunities for Gambian youth.

On the issue of unemployment and irregular migration, Minister Badjie explained that the government is investing in community-based programs and sports infrastructure to provide sustainable livelihoods.

He noted that grassroots sports committees across the country recently received D6.5 million in funding, a move designed to strengthen local engagement and reduce the pressures that drive young people to migrate irregularly.

Turning to football, the Minister defended the renewal of the National Team Head Coach’s contract, citing the coach’s role in guiding The Gambia through successive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns.

He emphasised that continuity in leadership is essential for building on recent successes, while also pointing out that expenditures for AFCON tournaments were managed prudently—D130.3 million in 2022 and D123.1 million in 2023—reflecting efficiency despite financial constraints.

Minister Badjie also provided an update on the Youth and Sports Bills currently under review. He explained that the reforms are intended to strengthen governance, accountability, and transparency in the management of sports and youth programs. These legislative efforts align with the National Sports Policy 2024–2034, which sets out long-term goals for infrastructure expansion and youth development.

“The government remains steadfast in its mission to empower young people, create jobs, and provide opportunities at home,” Minister Badjie stated, underscoring that sports is not only a source of national pride but also a driver of economic growth and social stability.
