Mayor Lowe receives prestigious GPM award

The Mayor of Banjul City Council Rohey Malick Lowe on Friday received the Dr Benjamin Barber Global Cities Award 2023.

 

The Banjul Mayor was given the award at the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM) Annual Summit 2023 in Skopje, North Macedonia, on 17 November.

In honour of the organization’s founder Dr Benjamin Barber, the GPM has established the Dr Benjamin Barber Global Cities Award to commemorate outstanding actions and researches in relation to strong city leadership, and the award is given on the basis of a candidate’s contribution to advancing the values and principles set out by the GPM.

“This prestigious recognition is a testament to her outstanding commitment and exceptional leadership in advancing the values and principles championed by the Global Parliament of Mayors,” says a statement by GPM. According to the GPM, the dynamic and innovative leadership of Mayor Lowe, The Gambia has not only transformed the lives of her constituents but has also served as an inspiring example to mayors and city leaders worldwide. The statement added that her “dedication to urban development, social progress, and sustainable initiatives “is truly commendable, and her tireless efforts to improve the quality of life in her city and her relentless pursuit of positive change have not gone unnoticed”.

The GPM also states that in a world facing numerous challenges, Mayor Lowe’s leadership “stands out as a beacon of hope and progress”. Her commitment to addressing issues such as climate change, public health, education, and social inclusivity resonates deeply with the core values of the Global Parliament of Mayors and also “her endeavours are setting a remarkable precedent for cities around the globe to follow”.

Mayor Lowe, however, expressed happiness and appreciation to GPM and for honouring her with such a prestigious award and has vowed to double up her efforts in serving the people of Banjul and the Gambia.

“I am so happy - Alhamdouliah - I want to thank the people of Banjul, the Global Parliament of Mayors and REFLA Gambia Chapter for their tireless support,” she appreciated.
