During the engagements, the delegation emphasized that the Personal Data Protection and
Privacy Act is designed to safeguard individuals’ personal data from misuse, theft, and fraud, while also guaranteeing the rights of data subjects under the new legal framework. The team further explained that the law applies to the processing of personal data by Data Controllers and Data Processors in The Gambia, but does not extend to the processing of anonymous
data or data handled for personal or household purposes.
The Information Commission and the Ministry of Information reaffirmed their commitment to
the effective implementation of the Act, ensuring that all stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to uphold data protection and privacy rights across the country.
The sensitization sessions provided an important platform for government representatives to interact directly with citizens, discuss the significance of the new law, and promote awareness about data protection and privacy rights nationwide.
