Info Ministry enlightens communities on PDPP Act

Information Commission and Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Sensitize Communities on Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act (PDPP). The Information Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services and the Department of Information Services, recently conducted community sensitization sessions on the newly enacted Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2025. Funded by the West Africa Regional Digital Integration Programme (WARDIP), these engagements took place from 22nd to 31st October 2025, targeting Local Government Councilors, Chiefs, Alkalolu, Law Enforcement Officers, as well as Youth and Women Leaders.

The community outreach sessions were held in the following communities:

 

  • Brikama, Besse (Foni), Bwiam (Foni), Jattaba, Kolior (Kiang)
  • Soma, Farafenne, Illiasa (Baddibou)
  • Ngayen Sanjal (NBR), Kaur, Panchang, Wassu (CRR North)
  • Basse Santasu, Basse Mansajang, Sarebojo (URR)
  • Bansang, Brikamaba (CRR South)

During the engagements, the delegation emphasized that the Personal Data Protection and

Privacy Act is designed to safeguard individuals’ personal data from misuse, theft, and fraud, while also guaranteeing the rights of data subjects under the new legal framework. The team further explained that the law applies to the processing of personal data by Data Controllers and Data Processors in The Gambia, but does not extend to the processing of anonymous

data or data handled for personal or household purposes.

The Information Commission and the Ministry of Information reaffirmed their commitment to

the effective implementation of the Act, ensuring that all stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to uphold data protection and privacy rights across the country.

The sensitization sessions provided an important platform for government representatives to interact directly with citizens, discuss the significance of the new law, and promote awareness about data protection and privacy rights nationwide.
