Ecowas Parliament Elects Billay Tunkara 4th Deputy Speaker

Honorable Billay Tunkara, National Assembly Member for Kantora Constituency, who also doubles as the Head of The Gambia’s Delegation was elected 4th Deputy Speaker of the Ecowas Parliament, at the inauguration of the 6th Legislature of the Community Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria on Thursday. 

Aside from the Speaker, who comes from Togo, based on the rotational basis by alphabetical order, the Parliament also elects 4 Deputy Speakers. 

"I write with great sense of humility and appreciation that I am duly elected as the 4th Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Legislature of the Ecowas Parliament," said Honorable Tunkara. 

He promised to live up to expectation, and thanked President Adama Barrow and everyone who supported him. "I would also like to thank Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta and my colleagues for nominating me to represent The Gambia at the Ecowas Parliament."

Hon Tunkara, who is also the majority leader at the National Parliament, is the first Gambian to be voted to such a position at the Ecowas Parliament. 

Hon Tunkara, together with Honorable Alhagie S. Darboe, Hon Maimuna Ceesay, Hon Sheriff Sarr and Hon. Amadou Camara, all members of The Gambia Delegation took their oaths today, Thursday, in the presence of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Ecowas Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
