The donation, which took place at the Gambia Police Headquarters in Banjul, is to equip the Gambia police with modern security gadgets and beef up crime scene management.
The items donated included crime scenes management equipment, police body cameras for interrogations, and investigations tools.
In his opening remarks on the occasion, Omar Tunkara, who spoke on behalf of the Director of Gambia Guardian Intelligence and Investigative Service, said Guardian is a non-profit organisation that seeks to promote security and complement Government efforts in the definition of criminal justice system.
He said the donated forensic and investigative equipment is to enhance the way crime scenes are covered, evidence gathering and the way investigations are handled.
Tunkara further highlighted that the gadgets will help police prove cases without doubts in courts and the body cameras would help in promoting transparency and strengthening security day and night.
On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Momodou Sowe, Deputy Inspector General of Police, said the security gadgets “came at a better time and will contribute a lot, as the police is not an exception in trying to modernise, reequip , retain and reform its service delivery system to the populace”.
In the 21st century, it is imperative that they catch up with science and technology to be able to do what is required of them, he said, adding: “We are dearly in need of such equipment to promote crime-free society and they will go a long way in strengthening our capacity in combating crime.”
Sowe said a vibrant, prosperous and developed society is a crime-free society. Thus, he implored the scientific support component of the police to utilise and make best use of the equipment, saying that it will enhance their work and uplift their technological background.
While expressing gratitude to Gambia Guardian Intelligence and Investigative Service for the gesture, he said the police force is the most expensive component, and “government alone cannot do all” thus relevant stakeholders should come forward and support the security of The Gambia.
