A total of 23 suspects including a Senegalese national, were apprehended in a series of anti-drug operations carried out by The Gambia’s Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) between 11th and 17th July 2025, marking yet another week of aggressive nationwide drug suppression efforts.

In its latest summary report, DLEAG revealed it registered 20 drug-related cases, with 22 Gambians and one Senegalese, a 20-year-old male arrested in Jakaoi Paima village, West Coast Region, among those nabbed. The foreign national was reportedly found in possession of 86 bundles and 1 parcel of cannabis sativa, 2 stones of hashish, and 40 ecstasy pills—suggesting a cross-border trafficking link.

During the weeklong crackdown, authorities confiscated large volumes of illegal substances including: cannabis sativa: 180 bundles, 7 parcels, 359 wraps, plus loose quantities.

Cannabis resin (hashish): 5 stones, 26 pieces, 25 wraps, plus some quantities were also seized.

Skunk cannabis: 1 medical plastic bag & 41 wraps, Kush: 37 wraps, Ecstasy: 40 pills, Molly: 29 wraps have all been seized.

The week also saw significant developments in court, with 5 new cases filed—four for possession of prohibited drugs and one for drug trafficking under the Drug Control Act (DCA) 2003. Meanwhile, seven convictions were secured, including four possession and three trafficking cases.

Cases were determined at the following courts: Banjul Magistrate Court – 1 case, Kanifing Magistrate Court – 1 case, Brikama Magistrate Court – 3 cases, Bundung Magistrate Court – 2 cases.

DLEAG also intensified its drug prevention and education campaigns. Radio sensitisation programmes aired on GRTS, Al-Falaq, and Paradise FM (Farafenni) targeted vulnerable listeners with anti-drug messages.

In addition, the Director General of DLEAG featured as a guest speaker at Yundum Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School’s prize-giving ceremony and the launch of the Culturally Diverse Association (CDA) in Banjul. The North Bank Regional Command also engaged pupils in an outreach programme at Farafenni Proper Lower Basic School, emphasising early awareness and prevention.
