Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, the leader and secretary general of the United Democratic Party (UDP), returned to The Gambia on October 25, 2025, to a tumultuous welcome after a successful European tour, where he reportedly strengthened diplomatic and economic ties.

Thousands of UDP supporters gathered from Banjul International Airport to Pipeline, showcasing the party's strong grassroots support ahead of the 2026 elections.

The turnout demonstrated Darboe's enduring popularity and the UDP's momentum.

Addressing party supporters at his Pipeline residence, the veteran politician emphasised unity and his vision for a prosperous Gambia.

Darboe called on the Diaspora to redirect remittances toward political change and urged supporters to remain focused on defeating President Adama Barrow's National People’s Party (NPP) administration, which he describes as corrupt and incompetent.

Darboe stressed the importance of unity among UDP supporters, emphasising that the party's strength lies in its diversity and collective efforts.

He praised the Diaspora contributions to The Gambia's economy and encouraged their continued involvement in national development, promising representation in decision-making processes if elected.

Darboe outlined the party's campaign strategy, including forging opposition alliances, courting undecided voters, and leveraging traditional and digital media responsibly.

He criticized President Barrow's administration for corruption, incompetence, and neglecting critical sectors like education, agriculture, and health.
