Sanyang Ward Councillor Botto Bojang has rejected claims by Gambia Ports Authority Managing Director Ousman Jobarteh that the community has officially allocated land for the Deep Sea Port project.

The dispute follows Jobarteh’s appearance on the popular radio talk show Coffee Time, where he said Sanyang had finally allocated land to Government for the port’s construction.

Councillor Bojang called the assertion false and clarified that Sanyang has not officially allocated any land.

“The community identified a site for the Deep Sea Port after rejecting initial sites earmarked for the project,” Bojang said. “But allocation is anchored on a Letter of Agreement that is yet to be signed between the community and either Government or GPA.”

“Officially, Sanyang has never allocated any land to GPA. We only identified land. If they are interested, we can sign the Letter of Agreement and move on,” he added.

Bojang said he was surprised to hear the Ports MD claim on Coffee Time that Sanyang had finally allocated land for the project. “This is not true. We have never allocated any piece of land to GPA for the construction of the project,” he said.

The councillor said his office has also engaged elders of Sanyang Bulunda to verify Jobarteh’s claims. None of the elders corroborated the Ports MD’s statement on land allocation.

“We have engaged the Bulunda elders and none of them can confirm the allocation of any land to GPA. So it is totally false to claim that the people of Sanyang have allocated land for the Deep Sea Port,” Bojang said.

On compensation, Bojang said Sanyang has not received any payment from GPA or Government. “So far, I can tell you that no authority in Sanyang has received any form of compensation from either the Government or GPA. Nothing has been paid to the community,” he said.

Bojang also dismissed suspicions that some Bulunda members may have allocated land clandestinely without the community’s consent. He described such claims as “entirely false and misleading speculations” aimed at sowing disunity among community members.

The Deep Sea Port is a flagship infrastructure project under Government’s port expansion plans. Land access in Sanyang has been a sticking point, with residents previously rejecting proposed sites over environmental and livelihood concerns.
