The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in The Gambia has celebrated the United Nations International Day of Dialogue among civilisations at a grand ceremony convened at the Charles Jow Memorial Academy in Bundung.

Organised by the Embassy, the occasion was marked through a Youth Bantaba cultural exchange event which also witnessed an inspiring example of friendship and cultural exchange between The Gambia and China.

The event also witnessed exciting interactions through classroom exchanges, Chinese calligraphy, lantern making and Gambian traditional dances with young people learning from one another, appreciating different cultures, and building bridges of understanding.

Zhao Shengsen, Deputy Ambassador at the Chinese Embassy, revealed that in 2023, His Excellency, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), highlighting the need for civilisations to live together in harmony.

He said the International Day of Dialogue Among Civilizations was designated on June 10th annually, established by the United Nations in keeping with the GCI, which has been warmly welcomed by the International Community.

He continued that China is ready to work with all civilisations to illuminate the path forward, drive progress through dialogue and mutual learning and create a brighter future for all humanity.

Karl Frederick Paul, UN Resident Coordinator in The Gambia revealed that the UN was founded on a simple but powerful conviction: that dialogue is the path to peace.

"The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations reminds us that our diversity is not a source of weakness, but a source of strength, learning and shared progress," he said.

"The Gambia has a proud tradition of hospitality, coexistence and dialogue. These values resonate strongly with the principles of the United Nations," he acknowledged.

Essa Sowe, chairman board of governors of the school, said the UN General Assembly, in proclaiming this day, recognised a simple but powerful truth; that humanity advances not when civilizations compete for dominance, but when they engage one another in mutual respect and learning.

"At a time when the world faces numerous challenges-from conflicts and climate change to inequality and misinformation, dialogue has become more necessary than ever," he added.

As a board, he said, "we firmly believe that education is one of the most powerful instruments for promoting dialogue among civilizations. Schools are unique spaces where young people learn not only mathematics, science, and languages, but also the values of tolerance, empathy, cooperation, and responsible citizenship.”

He informed that the board remains focused on strengthening governance systems, improving infrastructure, enhancing teaching and learning, promoting innovation, and expanding opportunities for their students.
