A medical doctor in Burkina Faso who openly criticised President Ibrahim Traoré's handling of terrorism in the country has been arrested and deployed to the frontlines.

The president reportedly responded to the criticism by saying, “Let him go and tackle terrorism since he knows better than the military.”

This incident follows President Traoré’s recent warning that any magistrate or judge who rules against his government will be conscripted into the army for two years. Similarly, journalists who criticise the regime or publish negative reports about the nation or government will also be required to serve in the military for two years.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, born on March 14, 1988, has been the interim leader of Burkina Faso since the September 2022 coup that ousted interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Despite facing several coup attempts, Traoré, at age 36, remains the youngest serving state leader and president in the world.
