Former Sports Minister and Mayor of Banjul, Samba Faal, who is lecturing at the School of Journalism and Digital Media, the University of The Gambia (UTG), has underlined that the biggest threat in today’s Gambian media is “lack of knowledge and ethical consideration.”

Faal made this remark whilst addressing journalism students at a Founders’ Day organised by the UTG Journalism Students’ Association

He stressed that journalists should be able to know a bit about every issue, particularly in areas of governance and politics in order to report in-depth.

Meanwhile, Sanna Camara, a panellist and also a student stated that professional journalism goes with ethical reporting. According to him, journalists should see themselves as voices of the people and should not compromise with standards.

“Journalism has been evolving. During our time, we trained on the job. Technology has compromised certain standards of the profession to the extent of making journalists lazy,” he said.

For her part, the vice president of The Gambia Press Union (GPU), Isatou Keita, who was also part of the panelists, said the Media Council and the GPU have been engaging in numerous capacity building for their members, particularly areas regarding ethics.

She addressed journalists to make the best use of the ‘Cherno Jallow Charter on Ethical Reporting’ whilst stating that ethical issues could be wide.

Founders Day is part of events organised by the School of Journalism and Digital Media Students’ Association to commemorate the work of journalists and journalism in shaping the media landscape.
