Barrow urges UDP to unconditionally accept Supreme Court ruling

Dec 30, 2021, 12:18 PM

The president of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E Adama Barrow has called on the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) to unconditionally accept the verdict of the Supreme Court of The Gambia after the Apex Court dismissed their petition which sought to invalidate the outcome of the 4th December 2021 presidential election which the incumbent Adama Barrow won by a landslide.  Speaking to executive members of his NPP party on Tuesday President Barrow says his opponents have exhausted all avenues and should now join forces to develop the country.

UDP reaction to Supreme Court judgment

Ousainou ANM Darboe, the leader of the country’s main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) which was challenging the December 4 presidential election results, has reacted publicly to the judgment of the Supreme Court.

Darboe, one time Foreign Affairs Minister and Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, said in a message circulated by his supporters: “United Democratic Party has never left anything wrong in this country to go unchallenged.  We have directed the jurisprudence of this country; we’ve directed how the constitution of this country should work.  We have not lost anything because the petition was not dismissed based on merit but a mere technicality. We should be Proud of ourselves for what we have done and will continue to do for Country.”

The Supreme Court earlier on Tuesday struck out the electoral petition filed by the UDP, which was seeking the court to nullify the just concluded presidential election. The court has also awarded a cost of D100, 000 in favour of first respondent.
