His Excellency President Adama Barrow yesterday received the President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves, who was accompanied by a high-level delegation including judges of the Court.

The delegation briefed President Barrow on the Court’s outreach programme in The Gambia from 22nd to 24th April 2026. The programme seeks to raise awareness of the Court’s mandate, while fostering deeper engagement with the Gambian judiciary, legal students and other stakeholders.

A key feature of the activities is the nomination of a Gambian judge to the ECOWAS Court, the first time The Gambia will be represented on the sub-regional bench. President Barrow affirmed that only highly- qualified judges were put forward for consideration.

During the meeting, President Barrow urged collective action to address West Africa’s pressing challenges, underscoring the importance of consolidating democracy, the rule of law and good governance.

He encouraged continuous engagement between the Court and member States to strengthen the partnership, noting that this was the first official visit by the ECOWAS Court since he assumed office in 2017.

Justice Gonçalves thanked President Barrow for the warm reception and commended The Gambia’s progress, particularly the advancement of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission and other national development efforts. (Source: State House)
