Momodou Lamin Nyassi, a revenue collector for Brikama Area Council (BAC), has accounted for monies he collected that were unaccounted for.

It was the day-3 of his appearance before the Local Government Commission of Inquiry (LGCI). He was questioned about the D160,000 collection made in April 2021.

He said they were cheque payments from one ST and QS (wood processing company) for D50,000 and Radville Farms for D110,000.

He added that the cheque details were not recorded in the cash book, admitting that he was supposed to record the details of the cheques in his cash book as dictated in the Financial Manual.

He was given the Eco Bank account statement of BAC to show the payments to the commissioners.

After scrutinizing the account statement, he said the payments were not in the account. As he proceeded, Nyassi pointed out a D110,000 cheque transfer but there was no name but only a cheque number and date.

He was asked to find out and provide the details to the Commission to establish whether the transfer was from Radville Farms.

Nyassi eventually provided two deposit slips for the amounts, thus accounting for the money. The slips were admitted in evidence.

However, the Commission also raised that on 6 May 2021, Nyassi collected D21,000 but he only deposited D1,000 in the bank account. Nyassi was questioned regarding the balance of D20,000 since they were cash payments.

He requested time to go back to check. He testified that he is responsible for the funds and he has to account for the fund.

“I accept the outstanding balance. I have to account for it. I don't know how it happened,” he testified.

Mr Modou Lamin Nyassi was again confronted with some other collections, but he was able to provide evidence to account for them.

He was discharged by the Commission to later provide details to clear the Commission's request regarding some of the cheque transfers.
