The statement, delivered to military personnel, served as both a rallying cry for cohesion and a stark warning against political meddling within the ranks.
CDS Cham emphasised that the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) is a “melting pot” representing the nation’s ethnic, religious, and regional diversity.
Recruits are deliberately posted across the country without regard to origin, he said, to solidify their identity as “guardians of the entire Gambian population, not factions, tribes, or politicians.”
While acknowledging soldiers’ right to vote as citizens, Cham stressed that political allegiance must end at the ballot box.
“Cast your vote in secret, then return to being a soldier,” he stated, warning that open loyalty to parties, leaders, or groups violates military law.
“If you want politics, remove the uniform first,” he declared, adding that subversion or dissent within ranks would not be tolerated.
Additionally, CDS condemned recent attempts by unnamed individuals to sow anger or wrong sentiments within the military, calling such acts “criminal” and “intolerable.”
While stopping short of legal action, he urged perpetrators to desist immediately signalling heightened scrutiny of internal discipline.
Cham also addressed the media, urging outlets to avoid amplifying rhetoric that could destabilize the nation.
“Do not platform divisive narratives,” he warned, reinforcing the military’s role as an apolitical institution subordinate only to the constitution and President Barrow, the elected Commander-in-Chief.
However, reiterating the GAF’s structure, Cham underscored that operational control flows from the President to the Chief of Defence Staff, supported by an Armed Forces Council to ensure fairness in promotions and policies.
“Respect your command, respect your duties, or face expulsion,” he stated, framing obedience as non-negotiable.
