This annual gesture, which began in 2006, has become a cornerstone of the foundation’s mission to support needy families during Ramadan—a time when Muslims embark on 30 days of fasting. Officials said the initiative is not only an act of charity but also a continuation of the legacy of Abubacarr Jawara’s late parents, who were widely respected for their generosity and community support.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony held in Yundum, Essa Jawara underscored the spiritual significance of helping Muslims during Ramadan. He noted that despite Jawara’s many business engagements, he felt it was essential to prioritise support for the needy, stressing the immense rewards of giving for the sake of Almighty Allah.
Renowned Islamic scholar Imam Abdoulie Fatty praised Jawara’s consistent contributions, praying for Allah to strengthen him and increase his wealth so he can continue supporting Gambians. He highlighted Jawara’s long-standing role in uplifting communities, describing his efforts as a blessing for the nation.
Similarly, Imam Chebou Cham expressed gratitude for Jawara’s yearly Ramadan donations, noting that the provision of rice and sugar comes at a critical time when many households struggle to afford basic necessities. “Today, every head of household is thinking about how to secure rice and sugar for Ramadan. Providing these items at the right time is worthy of commendation,” Imam Cham said, quoting Qur’anic verses and Hadiths on the virtues of helping others.
For his part, Yusupha Jawara reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to sustaining this tradition, stressing that Abubacarr Jawara has been donating since 2006 and intends to continue. He reminded the gathering of the blessings tied to giving: “When you give one, Almighty Allah gives you one. When you give ten, Allah gives you more than fifty. Allah will continue to bless Abubacarr Jawara.”
The donation is expected to bring relief to thousands of families across the country, ensuring that those fasting during Ramadan have food to break their fast. It also reinforces Jawara’s reputation as one of The Gambia’s most consistent philanthropists, whose humanitarian efforts continue to touch lives nationwide.
