Wife allegedly sets house ablaze, after husband marries second wife

According to the police public relations officer, Foday Conta, a housewife in Gidda village in The Gambia on Thursday 16 March 2017 set her matrimonial home ablaze, after her husband disclosed to her that he had married a second wife.

Isatou Jeng, upon being informed by her husband, Alhaji Secka, about the new development, reportedly became furious and decided to burn the house in which she and her husband were living, using fuel and candle, causing serious injuries to all inside the house at the time.

Speaking to The Point about the incident, Inspector Foday Conta said: “On Thursday 16 March 2017 at around 21 hours, an arson case was reported to Brikama Gidda Police Post; that one Isatou Jeng of Gidda poured fuel on a burning candle in a house, where she was in together with her husband Alhaji Secka.

“This was as a result of her husband informing her that he had married a second wife.”

PRO Conta further stated: “The house in which they were in caught fire, and the couple sustained serious injuries from the fire.”

Both, according to the police, were rushed to the Brikama Health Centre, and further referred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, a case file has been opened by the police for the matter to be investigated.
