Weightlifting to vote in IWF elections despite ‘suspension’

There has been a rather strange twist in the life of the Gambia Weight lifting Association who is supposed to be under suspension by the international parent body the International Weightlifting Federation IWF, and currently locked in a bitter row with the GNOC who says they cannot vote in the forthcoming elective congress.

The Gambian association has been included to participate in the IWF electoral congress to be held in Moscow in May.

The invitation was conveyed to the president of the Gambian chapter Musa Koteh who has been asked to attend the meeting firm May 12-22 in the Russian capital.

Asked to comment on this development Koteh said he has always emphasized that his exclusion by the GNOC was politically motivated and in fact illegal  ‘’Firstly the alleged suspension was only going to take effect when the executive body of the IWF meets which is not yet. Secondly our association is now being invited to attend the IWF congress. We would not have been invited if our supposed suspension had been affected,’’ he argued.

The GNOC President Momodou Dibba had however said that the Weightlifting association cannot vote in the congress on the advice of the IOC based on the fact that they are under suspension by the IWF.
