Writers’
Association of The Gambia (WAG) on Saturday held a day international press
conference where they discussed past, present and future engagement of the
association both within and outside the country.
WAG
is one of the seventh artistic associations in The Gambia. It was established
in 2009, and since then it has been engaging in activities aside from the
production of books.
Hassoum
Ceesay, Director General of the National Center for Arts and Culture (NCAC)
applauded WAG for their efforts especially on promotion of reading and writing.
He also expressed the National Center for Arts and Culture’s satisfaction on
their other activities as they are not limited within the association and its
members.
“WAG
is doing very well to promote Gambia literature, Gambia culture and literacy.
The NCAC and Ministry of Tourism and Culture are very happy with the
association and its general members,” he said.
The
NCAC Director General without restriction encouraged them to continue in their
good trend while he further assured them of the Ministry and his center
supports on their activities. Saying “all their activities fall within the
parameters of the national development plan, particularly in the area of
quality education through literacy, a vibrant reading culture.”
Musa
Bah, vice president and Modou Lamin Age-Almusaf Sowe – Secretary General of WAG
expounded on the Writers’ Association of The Gambia engagement.
Both
of the executive members dilated on their recent international invitations
extended to the association which includes invitation from the Senegalese
Writers Association as guest of honor at the African Writers Week, scheduled
for 6th to 9th November and Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) slated for
11th to 14th November taking place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
In
addition, some other WAG members have been invited for a month long Residency
in Nigeria and Sierra Leone for the months of November and December 2019.
In
their quest to continue promoting reading and writing among the school children,
the WAG is set to sign Memorandum of Understanding with some key partners to
begin work in earnest. And also, to ensure their programs and activities are
implemented.
