Hundreds
of volunteers on Saturday descended on the Cabinet farm in Jalanbang, West
Coast Region, to weed the four-hectare maize plantation.
Speaking
at the farm, Abdou Colley, minister of finance, said the overall idea of Vision
2016 is to end decades of importation of food into the country and to
ultimately make the nation food self-sufficient.
“The
Gambian leader is of the strong view that embracing agriculture will not only
seal the country’s food insecurity gap, but will also enable Gambians to live
in an independent and dignified manner,” he said.
The
farm manager, Adama Nyassi who is the chairman of the Jalanbang village
development committee, said the volunteers have shown real patriotism and love
for not only cabinet ministers but President Jammeh.
The
councilor of Nyambai ward, Pa Ousman Manneh, said volunteering to weed the
Cabinet farm is in line with President Jammeh’s Vision 2016 food security
attainment.
The
chief executive officer of Brikama Area Council, Mam Sait Jallow, hailed the
efforts of Gambians for supporting President Jammeh in the attainment of Vision
2016 food self-sufficiency.
He
said Gambians should take agriculture seriously as “it is the only way forward”
in the attainment of food security.
The
Alkalo of Jalanbang, Lamin ‘Mondo’ Jatta, hailed the efforts of Gambians for
supporting President Jammeh in the attainment of Vision 2016 food
self-sufficiency.
He
assured of their readiness in participating in the attainment of Vision 2016
food self-sufficiency initiative while commending the volunteers for their hard
work.
