Trial commences of men accused of assaulting police officer

Trial commenced yesterday of Malang Jeng and Omar Jeng, accused of assaulting a police officer and willful damage to property, before Magistrate Janneh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

The first prosecution witness (PW1), Ansuman Jatta, a police officer, told the court that he recognized the accused persons and could recall what happened on 7 October 2015.

PC 4887 Jatta said on the day in question, he was on duty at Sanchaba Police Station when a complainant came to lodge a complaint that he was sent by his boss, one Ali, to lodge a complaint against the accused persons.

He then left for the scene with CPL Jawo and PC Bojang, adding that the complainant, Ali, pointed at the accused.

He said the accused persons started insulting the complainant, adding that he then approached the 2nd accused to stop insulting.

He said he told the 2nd accused that he was needed at the police station and the accused said he was not going, adding that he told the accused that he must go.

Officer Jatta further said that he held the 2nd accused’s hand and the accused strangled him, adding that his colleague, PC Bojang, came to rescue him and the 1st accused went to PC Bojang to stop him from helping Jatta.

He adduced further that the 2nd accused held on his neck and tore his uniform, adding that an unknown taxi driver went to the station and came with two police officers, and with their help, the accused persons were arrested and taken to the police station.

At the police station, he gave his statement.

The case was adjourned till 29 October 2015.
