The Ministry of Fisheries, in collaboration with Insight Training Centre on Sunday 12th July 2009, concluded a three-day training seminar for operators and retailers on waste management, at Brikama Fish Market in the campus of
Speaking at the forum, the Deputy Governor of Western Region, Mrs. Sainabou Faal underscored the importance of the training, adding that it would strengthen and build-up capacities of retailers and operators.
According to Deputy Governor Faal, the fish market is very timely as it creates job opportunities and thus alleviates poverty. She said it will also serve as a storage facility for retailers.
For his part, the Chairman of Brikama Area Council, Mr. Sunkary Badjie, commended the Ministry of Fisheries for organising such training for local communities, especially on issues pertaining to waste management, which he said, should be everyone's concern.
Governor Badjie also commended the Japanese government for sponsoring the project. He then advised the community to take ownership of the market, and not perceive it as something belonging to the government of
He therefore said that it is a collective responsibility to ensure that the project becomes a reality.
