Tallinding Islamic Institute under The Gambia Islamic Union Wednesday handed over secondhand clothing to the National Disaster Management Committee, at a ceremony held at the school grounds in Tallinding.
The items were meant for those affected by natural disaster, as well as other disasters.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, Alhagie Abdou K. Sarr, Secretary General, Gambia Islamic Union, said their role was not only to teach and preach but also to give some humanitarian assistance.
“We are out to propagate Islam,” he said, adding that they are not giving the items to individuals; instead they give it to the agency responsible for disaster management in the country so that it would reach those affected by the disaster.
Receiving the items, Sering Modou Joof, assistant director of National Disaster Management Committee, thanked Tallinding Islamic Institute under The Gambia Islamic Union for the kind gesture to those affected by disasters in the country.
He said the rain has just started and many of these items would be needed.
He commended the Tallinding Islamic Institute for coming with the good initiative, whilst calling on other institutions to emulate Tallinding Islamic Institute for the helping hand.
Tallinding Islamic Institute was the first institute that came with the initiative, he said, adding that a country could not develop without proper education and this would only be possible when there is unity and love for one another.
People should help one another, he added, while calling on other schools, organizations and individuals to help those affected by natural and other disasters taking place in the country.
