The government of the republic of China on Taiwan through its embassy in Banjul last Friday donated over D25 million dalasi to the Government of The Gambia.

Taiwanese ambassador Samuel Chen presented the cheque for $865,790 for the renovation and rehabilitation of the dilapidated Old Police Lines in Banjul.

The cheque was received by the Secretary General and Head of Civil Service, Njugo L. Bah, at a ceremony held in his office in Banjul.

In presenting the cheque, Ambassador Chen said the police are very important for the maintenance of security in the country, and expressed hope that the gesture would boost their accommodation.

Dr Njugo Bah, for his part, said: “today is another significant day in our bilateral cooperation.”

He added that the gesture is once again another manifestation of the cordial ties between the two countries.

He said the gesture is in line with President Yahya Jammeh’s vision to provide proper housing for the Gambian people, including the security forces. The President had earlier done the same for the army, and it was now the turn of the police.

The presentation ceremony was attended by Tom Lee of the Taiwanese embassy and Ms Ramou Cole Ceesay permanent secretary at the Office of the President.
