As part of the relentless and continued support of the Republic of China on Taiwan to the socio-economic development of the Gambia, the Taiwanese government through its embassy in Banjul on Monday June 8 2009, presented a cheque for $2.75 million, earmarked for the construction of Sankulay Kunda Bridge in the Central River Region.

It was presented to President Jammeh at State House by the Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia His Excellency, Dr.Richard Shih.

Presenting the cheque Ambassador Shih expressed hope that when completed the Bridge will ease movement in the area, particularly for the people of the Central River Region. He commended the people of the region for their commitment to national development.

President Jammeh, who received the cheque, thanked the government of Taiwan for the benevolence gesture.

Jammeh said he had long time ago promised the residents that he would build the bridge. He said upon completion the project would bring lots of benefits to the country.

The Minister of Forestry and Environment, Momodou Kotu Cham also commended the government and people of Taiwan for the assistance.

If everything goes well, the project is expected to finish by October this year.
