A one-day symposium on youth and children engagement in climatic actions was last Friday held at the Kanifing Municipal Council.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Forestry and Environment, Mr. Abdoulie Danso said climate change is a phenomenon known to everybody in the country. He stated that "climate change happens because human beings are going beyond to challenge nature by cutting down trees thus having an impact on the climate."

He added that as human beings contribute to climate change efforts should be made to reduce its impacts.

According to him, Africa is not the only reason for climate change but also industrialised countries too. He cited forestry and wild life conservation as one of the policies undertaken to address the current climatic situation.

Also addressing the symposium, Mr. Essa Khan, the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency said developed countries have some historical responsibilities for climate change. He called for the collective collaboration of the young in order to tackle the menace of climate change.

"We all have a common responsibility to preserve the planet for the present and future generations to come. Common responsibility in the sense that it affects all of us," he stated.

He stated that the Disaster Committee cannot be responsible for all disasters, noting that a policy should be developed to act as an agency, which includes preparations.
