Following the cancellation of the Gambia National Olympic Committee presidential election recently, the National Sports Council would like to inform all stakeholders of sport of its regret for the inability of the Gambia National Olympic Committee to stage the election on the scheduled day.
Below is the full text of the release signed by Abdul Aziz Titao Mendy, Development Officer of the National Sports Council.
The National Sports Council enacted by an Act of Parliament in 2000 as an autonomous body to regulate all sporting associations in The Gambia hereby informs all stakeholders in sports and the general public of its regret of the inability of the Gambia National Olympic Committee to conduct its scheduled presidential election on 20th October 2010 due to differences among the contending parties on the list of eligible voters for the elections, which has warranted the withdrawal of the Independent Electoral Commission from conducting it.
The National Sports Council in exercise of one of its mandates, which is "to strengthen the cohesion among the various structures of the Gambian Sports Associations and other sporting organisations", encourages all parties to exercise diplomacy, mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play in order to reconcile their differences for all the overall interest of the development of sports in The Gambia.
The National Sports Council is and will continue to engage all genuine stakeholders in this endeavour for the quick and absolute resolution of problems at the GNOC.
