Spain and The Gambia will sign a new agreement on trade and infrastructure to boost the economy of the two countries, according to Antonio Sánchez Benedito, Spain’s roving ambassador for the Sahel region.

“We will sign the new agreement aimed at boosting the economy of The Gambia and Spain in the near future”, the envoy said recently to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Mr. Benedito was visiting to seek support from The Gambia for Spain’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2015.

The ambassador held a meeting in private with President Yahya Jammeh in Banjul.

“We had a fruitful discussion on a wide range of issues such as peace, security and economic development in the region,” said Mr. Benedito.

“We are also seeking the support of The Gambia for our candidature to the Security Council of the United Nations for 2015-2016’.
