The Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia celebrated the 4th edition of the National Sports award on Saturday 1 September 2012 at the SunSwing Beach Hotel in Kololi.
The celebration brought together sports reporters and personnel from all the media houses and institutions in the country to commemorate the day.
This year’s celebration is tipped as exceptional and considered more successful than the previous ones held by the sports association.
Sulayman Bah of Foroya newspaper emerged the most outstanding sportswriter of the year; Momodou Ceesay won the player of the year award, Demba Jarju the Paralympics player of the year award, and Suwaibou Sanneh the sportsman of the year award.
Furthermore, Africell was honoured as the most outstanding organization in support of sport, Abdoulie Bah of West Coast Radio won the sports broadcaster of the year award and Gamtel emerged the team of the year for both the mail and female football categories capturing the breakthrough sport of the year award.
The referee of the year award, a special award sponsored by Gambia US-based international referee Baboucarr Jallow, went to Bakary Papa Gasama.
The Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia also gave a Life Time Achievement in Sports Awards to Alh Momodou Njie (Biri) and Beatrice Allen.
‘Contribution to Gambia Sports’ awards were also given to the following: Dodou Joof, Abdoulie Touray, Alh Pap Saine, George Gomez, Remi Joiner and Musa Njie.
The 2011/12 awards ceremony was sponsored by Africell, Gambia Tourism Board, Banjul Breweries Limited, NAWEC, Bergen/Gambian community based in Norway and Trust Bank Limited.
