The Point has learnt through reliable sources that Mr Malick Jones, head of current affairs, documentary and sports at the Gambia Radio and Television Services, GRTS, has been appointed as the new Deputy Director General of GRTS as part of a major shake-up at the state broadcaster.

Jones replaces Mr Momodou Joof who, our source said, is now the Senior Manager of Administration at GRTS.

According to our source, the restructuring of the institution, which seeks to make it more focused and more effective, also saw the appointment of Mr Lamin Manga as Director of Programs.

Mr  Manga replaces Kebba Dibba who, our source said, is now a Producer.

When contacted, Malick Jones and Lamin Manga both confirmed their appointment, which took effect on Monday 19th December.

Jones, a seasoned broadcaster, described the move as a good development for the Gambia Radio and Television Services.

“We believe that the President believes in young people being able to turn things round within the institution. We are not strangers to this job, because we have been in the system for over 32 years now,” he said.

According to Jones, some of his main priorities will be to give the entire system at GRTS a facelift, especially in areas of presentation; how best to change the image of GRTS and to elevate the status of the staff and make a positive impact on the international community watching, especially those abroad so that they can have more confidence in GRTS.

“We want to come and make a difference,” he added.

In a related development, this paper was also reliably informed that Mr Bakary Sanyang has been confirmed as the managing Director of GAMTEL.

Sanyang was overseeing Gamtel since the removal of Mr Jamal Micknas as Managing Director of GAMTEL in June this year.
