The village of Sanyang in the West Coast Region of Kombo South on Saturday commissioned a new library established by a Dutch couple, Hans and Aly.

The gesture was spearheaded by the Sanyang Youth Tesito Association (SYTA) to inculcate a reading habit in the people of the village.

Speaking at the presentation, Aly said they came up with the idea to establish a library for the villagers few years ago.

She said they had  brought 360 books to kick start the library, adding that they are also planning to extend the library.

She further told the youths at the village that the gesture was made possible through collaborating with 'READ TO GROW' Foundation in the  Netherlands.

She urged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the books.

Prior to setting up the library, the couple had been contributing towards the upkeep of the hospital in the village.

Abdou Kolley, a member of the Village Development Committee (VDC), thanked the donors describing the development as "a worthy gesture".

"Education is Power as it can determine one's future," he said, adding that the donation "is a priceless opportunity for students in the community".

Mr Kolley profoundly thanked the couple, saying "the library will go a long way in helping the village".

Also speaking on the occasion, the chairman of SYTA, Sharif  K. Bojang, said such a gesture was "the first in the village" describing it as "timely".

He also praised the donors for helping the people to ease their research constraints and to develop themselves, and assured the donors that the people "will make best use of the library".
