Red Stars and Santos have sailed to the semifinals in the 2015 Gunjur knock-out competition, after eliminating Reliance Financial Services and Commit FC in their respective quarterfinal matches played at the Gunjur Nyamina football field on Sunday.
Red Stars beat Reliance Financial Services 1-0 in the first quarterfinal game played at 3 pm, to advance to the semifinal.
Striker Yusupha Barrow alias Beckham, scored the only goal for Red Stars in the game after capitalising on Reliance Financial Services goalkeeper Modou Secka’s blunder to fired home the opener, which eventually proved to be the winner for the Red boys.
Reliance responded for an equalizer, but to no avail and the game ended 1-0 in favour of Red Stars.
The reigning league and super cup champions Santos beat Commit on penalties, after a 2-2 all draw in regulation time in the second quarterfinal tie at 5 pm.
Santos beat Commit 1-0 in the league competition prior to their knock-out quarterfinal clash.
Santos opened the scores through striker Muhammed Janneh a few minutes into the game, after smashing through the Commit defence line to give Santos the lead.
Commit fought back and leveled the scores through midfielder Kalifa Touray alias Xavi, before the break to cancel Muhammed Janneh’s opener.
Santos regained the lead through centre-back Lamin Chorr Jatta, after beating Commit’s off-side trapped to make it 2-1.
Centre back Jerreh Bojang aka Christiano Ronaldo levelled the scores for Commit midway into the game, to cancel Lamin Chorr Jatta’s second goal, and sent the game into a penalty shoot-out, which ended in favour of Santos.
Santos now joins Red Stars in the 2015 Gunjur knock-out semifinals.
Reliance Financial Services and Commit are the latest causalities in Gunjur’s summer biggest football fray.
