Re-opening of border would be a welcome development

May 10, 2011, 2:24 PM

The current border problem between the Gambia and Senegal, which has been and continues to be a major concernto people, needs our urgent attention.

We are happy to hear that the national transport unions of the two countries have amicably resolved the problem, and the border will be opened today.

People have to put one thing at the back of their minds.

That is, the border closure has serious negative economic implications for the two countries.

The Gambia and Senegal share a lot in common, both geographically and culturally, and they need to support each other at all levels.

It is important that unions discussed pertinent issues that are of mutual interest and benefit to the two countries, and help avoid problems.

We should know that governments have used the various diplomatic channels at their own level to avoid misunderstanding.

That was why the two governments set up inter-ministerial committees all geared towards building a good relationship between the two states.

The Gambian and Senegalese nations are the same people. No one can separate them.

United we stand; Divided we fall!
