Prison Escapee Gets Extra Sentence

The Banjul Magistrates Court on Monday convicted and sentenced one Pa Balla Njie to a prison term of four months for the offence of escaping from lawful custody.

He was also ordered by the court to serve full sentence of the previous offence and the sentences are to run consecutively.

 According to the facts of the case the convict was serving a one-year-six-month imprisonment term on the offence of arson at the Jeshwang prison wing of Mile 2 prisons.

It all happened when the convict was on 12th March 2007 escorted from his cell for the usual gardening exercise. In the process, it was revealed in statement of fence, the convict managed to hide himself in a kitchen until an opportune moment allowed him to clamber over the fence into what ended to be transient freedom.

The fact further revealed that on 1st April 2008 the convict was spotted in a passenger vehicle and was arrested and taken back to prison.

The case was presided over by Principal Magistrate B.Y. Camara.
