The National Sports Council has issued a press released rejecting the Gambia National Olympic Committee's proposed date for its election slated for October 16.
The released revealed that the election date set aside by the GNOC is not in accordance with its constitution of May 2001 which was endorsed by the International Olympic Committee in June 2001.
Below we re-produced the full text of the press release sent to Pointsport by the National Sports Council yesterday signed by the Executive Secretary, Mr Besenty Gomez.
The National Sports Council is hereby informing all stakeholders in sports and the general public that the Gambia National Olympic committee's scheduled date of October 16th for the election of the President is not in accordance with the GNOC constitution of May 2001 endorsed by the International Olympic Committee in June 2001.
In this regard, the National sports Council hereby urges the Gambia National Olympic committee to uphold and respect its constitution which stipulates in the Article 7.4 a notice of date for the session to be circulated at least 30 days in advance before the date of the election.
In light of this, the GNOC cannot hold any election earlier than October 20th which would be exactly 30 days from the official date of nomination which was September 20th.
The GNOC can therefore hold election between October 20th and October 30th and not earlier.
We hope that justice guides our actions for the common good in our Quest to ensure excellence in sports through mass participation.
