The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with NAWEC, PURA and NEA has begun a nationwide sensitisation campaign on Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation.

Speaking at the forum held at the Governor's office in Brikama on Monday, Mr. Modou Manneh, Senior Energy Officer said The Gambia government is committed to the provision of adequate reliable efficient and affordable energy to support socio-economic development of the country.

He noted that electricity as a form of energy is among the most important energy source in The Gambia and the world in general.

He said electricity is also the most convenient form of energy, as according to him, it can power all forms of demands, such as water, pumping, cooking, and reduction plants, to name but a few.

Mr. Manneh further stated that it is necessary to put in place an effective system to efficiently manage the electricity produce, noting that the demand side management is very important to ensure that the energy produce is wisely and efficiently used.

He stated that it is against this backdrop that the government had adopted a policy to promote energy efficiency and conservation at the Ministry of Energy.

He also noted that although The Gambia has made significant strides in the achievement of the MDGs and Vision 2020, these set goals can never be achieved without having adequate, reliable and affordable electricity service.

He commended the UNDP for sponsoring this sensitisation campaign and Total Oil Company for their support.
