The High Court in Janjangbureh, presided over by Justice Lamin Jobarteh, Wednesday convicted and sentenced one Ngai Njie to death.

Njie, believed to be in his 50s, was said to have, in 2000, murdered one Abdou Joof, a Senegalese national, on the farm at Batindar village in the Upper Saloum district in Central River Region North.

In his judgment, Justice Jobarteh, among other things, stated that the convicted person, Ngai Njie, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

He added that after evaluating the evidence of both the prosecution witnesses, and that of the convict, the court found him guilty of the offence charged, and consequently convicted and sentenced him accordingly.

According to our provincial reporter, after the sentence, the convict was taken to Janjangbureh prison, where he attempted to commit suicide, by wounding himself seriously and was taken to Janjangbureh Health Centre, then later referred to Bansang Hospital.
