Man arraigned for stealing

A man identified as one Muhamadou Lamin Camara was recently arraigned before Magistrate Kayode of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court, charged with stealing, a charge he denied.

According to the charge sheet, on 23rd April 2010, at Westfield, the accused, Muhamadou Lamin Camara stole a Samsung mobile phone, valued at D2500 from one Babacarr Jallow.

Testifying before the court, the second prosecution witness, Sergin Omar Bojang said that he is a military officer and could recognise the accused person.

According to him, on the day in question, he was on his way to Banjul at night with his taxi when he picked up passengers, among them was the accused.

He adduced that when he was about to move, he heard people shouting coming towards his vehicle, alleging that the accused had stolen a mobile phone.

He revealed that he then told the complainant to dial his phone number and the mobile rang with the accused inside the vehicle.

Further testifying, PW2 adduced that he told the accused to come down and he (PW2) identified himself to the accused as a military officer. He stated that he then arrested the accused and took him to Kanifing Police Station, where his statement was taken.

The case was subsequently adjourned to 22nd June 2010 for continuation.
