A man was recently arraigned before Magistrate Tabally of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, charged with obtaining money by false pretence and issuing false cheques.

Prudencio Esteban Montesdeoca denied the charges and was granted court bail of D200,000 with a Gambian surety who must swear to an affidavit of means and also deposit an ID card.

The charge sheet on count one stated that in January 2011, at Fajara, in the Kanifing Municipality, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, Prudencio obtained D75,000 from one Bangally Sillah and D20,000 from one Muhammed Wally under the pretext of providing them  invitation letters to obtain a Spanish visa, which representation he knew to be false.

Count two stated that between February and March 2011, at Fajara, in the Kanifing Municipality, without any reasonable excuse, Prudencio issued four GTBank cheque leaves with account number 4007456110, of which one was issued to Muhammed Wally and three to Bangally Sillah, each containing a face value of D25,000, when he knew such amount was not in his account.

Hearing continues on 5 September 2011.
