We have seen many elderly people moving from one place to another in our streets seeking assistance to eke out a living, sometimes soliciting medical assistance, among others.
We are using this opportunity to call on the public, especially the youth, to be always supportive of the elderly people.
While in some quarters certain elements do not have regard for the elderly, we urge the young ones to always respect their elders and support them all time.
Once again, we encourage you to always give care and support to the elderly in all spheres of human life.
The problem of abusing the elderly may not be a serious issue in The Gambia, but it does occur.
As a result, concerted efforts are needed to ensure maximum protection, care and support for the elderly in our society.
As elders become more physically frail, they are less able to stand up to the day-to-day challenges in life, and as a result they need to be protected from harm.
Be it physical, sexual or emotional abuse, all forms of abuse meted outto elderly persons must stop in our communities.
The elderly deserve better treatment and respect from all including their grandchildren and neighbours.
People should not take advantage of their age and frailties to cheat them financially or otherwise.
The younger generation must learn to respect the elders of our social milieu, as they are the biological source of our being.
