Gambia delegation return from Africa Youth Games with Bronze

The Gambian delegation to the 1st Edition of the African Youth Games - Rabat 2010, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees in Africa (ANOCA) arrived at the Banjul International Airport early morning of Wednesday 21st July from Morocco where the games were being held.  

The Gambia was among the 42 African countries that were represented at these maiden games. 

1008 athletes competed in 16 sports disciplines - Athletics, Cycling, Swimming, Football, Judo, Taekwondo, Fencing, Shooting, Rowing, Canoe Kayak, Weightlifting, Tennis, Boxing, Table Tennis and Basketball. Over 250 officials were present.

The Gambia was represented in Athletics by Omar Ceesay, Fatou Sowe and Baba Gibba, who competed 100m, 200m boys and girls, 1000m individual events and the zonal Medley Relay (4 X 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m) for boys.  Omar Ceesay won the bronze medal in the 200m individual event for boys, and together with Baba Gibba, Dawda Jagne of Senegal Adelino A. Nanjola of Guinea Bissau won the Gold in the zonal Medley Relay for Zone II. The athletes were able to reach the finals in all their events.  

The delegation also comprised Mr. Abdul Shyllon, the Head of Delegation, Ms. Mary Pedro-Decker, Chef de Mission and Ms. Mam Keway Ceesay, the Coach

The trip was fully funded by the Gambia National Olympic Committee-GNOC.
