Kanifing United on Sunday defeated MJ Finance FC by 3-0 to guarantee a place in the semifinal stage of the ongoing Serrekunda West Sports Organisation (SWESO) Seaview-sponsored knockout competition played at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.
A brace from Aziz Mendy in the 17th and 43rd minutes and Ablie Jallow in the 58th minute of the game was all but enough to give Kanifing United an easy ride over MJ Finance FC.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the game, Haji Tunkara, head coach of Kanifing United, said he was sure they were going to win because his team has been playing up to expectations in their previous two games.
He also added that his forward players were also more powerful than MJ Finance FC’s defence line, which gave them an easy edge over their opponents, saying they used their flank players to penetrate MJ Finance defence.
He stated that their slow start to the nawetan competition was due to lack of fitness and injuries from his players but that they are going for victory in their upcoming games.
Kekuta Sanneh, assistant coach of MJ Finance, said it was disappointing for them to crash out of the knockout competition after being relegated from the nawetan proper. “But this is football and we have taken it in good faith and wish the other teams in the competition luck.
He noted that the performance his side put up against Kanifing United was not good enough to stop United but that their team has been going through a lot of problems this season, which they hope to resolve before next season.
