Substitute Kebba Jammeh’s 56th minute goal was all but enough to earn knockout champions Kairaba FC a 1-0 win over league champions Nema Youths FC in the Super Cup final of Sukuta Youths and Sports Association.
The Sunday match played at the Demba Du Mini Stadium saw
Kairaba FC home with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D5,500 as winners, while Nema Youths FC collected a consolation prize of D4,500 as runners-up.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the game, Ebrima Njie, head coach of Kairaba FC, said this year he is going for both the league and the knockout trophies.
“The game was tough as both teams prepared well,” he said, adding that he was confident he was going to win because his side had beaten Nema Youths FC in the past and the latter are yet to beat them.
Abdoulie Darboe, head coach of Nema Youths, described the defeat as “a normal thing”, adding that it would not affect their campaign in trying to retain their league trophy.
Buba Cham, president of Sukuta Youth and Sports Association, said the final was an interesting game as both teams played very well, adding that even though they were not able to pull a big crowd as expected due to the rain, they were happy they started in peace and would look forward to completing the competition in a calm atmosphere.
The nawetan teams have been increased from 20 to 24 teams, which shows that there is improvement in Sukuta football, he said, adding that they are expecting to see quality football among the 24 teams in Sukuta.
